Under the direction of the Maintenance Engineering Office Branch Chief, a Supervising Transportation Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining the health of electrical field elements, directing work assigned to the Office of Maintenance Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and delivering electrical Minor B projects. This position will direct a staff of Transportation Engineers and Transportation Engineering Technicians.

This position requires possession of a valid certificate of registration as an electrical engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Working Conditions

Position is located in Stockton, San Joaquin County.

Incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting in an office setting or at an approved telecommute location; however, due to unexpected heating and air conditioning problems in the office locations, building temperature may fluctuate. Telecommuting is subject to completion and approval of the department's Telecommute Agreement. The incumbent will also be required to travel between the District Office, Headquarters, and other districts throughout the state to attend meetings or trainings. Occasional overtime, night work, and overnight travel may be required.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.



New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualification (SOQ) is required.  Failure to include and complete the SOQ may result in disqualification for interview.

The SOQ is to be no more than two pages in size, 12 pt. Century Gothic font, describing how the applicant’s work history and educational background make them the ideal candidate for the position. Failure to include an SOQ with responses to the questions below will disqualify the applicant from being considered for the position.
