Horizons at Saint David’s is a tuition-free, all-boys program serving students from our partner schools in East Harlem committed to preventing summer learning loss. Our 6 week summer program provides high-quality academic enrichment as well as hands-on experiences in STEM, art, music, athletics and aquatics. Boys start as rising first graders and return each summer through their elementary and middle school years. Horizons at Saint David’s operates a proven model and is part of an affiliated network with over 70 Horizons sites serving students across the country. Title: Reading Specialist Direct Supervisor: Executive Director Position Overview: Horizons at Saint David’s is seeking a dedicated and effective Reading Specialist with a dynamic talent for creating and nurturing a lifelong love of learning in children. We are looking for a talented, passionate, caring professional who will work as a team player, fulfill the Horizons mission, and create a joyous, inclusive, inspiring and educational culture. The Reading Specialist will be an integral part of the Horizons team, leading the development and support of the literacy program for students in grades 1-8 including the administration of assessments and their use in instructional planning, delivery of small group/individualized instruction, sharing of best practices, and enhancing learning opportunities for students and staff. Specific Duties: ? Create a classroom environment that supports the Horizons mission of empowering students to take risks, learn from failure, and feel affirmed in their leadership. ? Develop specialized learning plans for students on an as needed basis. ? Provide one-on-one and or small group tutoring as needed to help students develop basic literacy skills ? Identify, via pre-program assessment, readers who need additional support ? Offer guidance to faculty to help develop or strengthen reading instruction curriculum and differentiated student skill groups for small group instruction that would be helpful to staff members, individually and/or during the summer or during professional planning days; ? Train/advise volunteers and interns as needed to work with students as additional reading tutors ? Meet with ED, Lead and Assistant Teachers as needed to accomplish goals and/or problem solve concerns as needed ? Complete surveys and debrief documents at the close of the program Qualifications : ? Three or more years of experience as a reading specialist, reading teacher, or elementary school teacher ? Masters in Reading Instruction preferred ? Experience administering and analyzing reading skills assessments ? Commitment to advancing educational equity Location : Saint David’s School 12 East 89th Street, New York, NY Schedule : ? June 30, 2025 - August 8, 2025 (closed July 4th in observance of Independence Day) ? Monday - Friday 8:00 am -3:00pm ?
